Since 1986, Nutriset has been committed to scaling up nutrition through developing innovative nutritional solutions to prevent and fight malnutrition. With the development of PlumpyField – a network of producers in developing countries- Nutriset is also supporting the nutritional autonomy and local production of these solutions in countries suffering from a high burden of under-nutrition.
Statement of Commitments
For 27 years, the mandate of Nutriset remains the same: nourish the children. If the target population of our products evolves (pregnant and lactating women, people affected with HIV/ Aids or tuberculosis) the mission stays identical: to invent, produce and make accessible nutritional solutions to prevent and fight malnutrition.
In 1996, Nutriset introduced a huge change in the management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) around the world by developing Plumpy’Nut®, the first ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) which made it possible for children and adults with SAM to receive home-based, medically supervised treatment instead of being treated in a hospital setting. It both improved the number of children receiving treatments and the recovery rate.
Since the introduction of Plumpy’Nut®, we have developed a complete range of nutritional solutions (including Plumpy’SupTM, Plumpy’DozTM, Enov’Nutributter®) and have become the world leader in manufacturing and making accessible nutritional products that effectively prevent and treat moderate and severe malnutrition in southern countries. The latest products, launched in 2013, are designed for pregnant and lactating women: Plumpy’MumTM and Enov’ MumTM. Both products are respectively designed to address acute malnutrition in low BMI women and to enhance women nutritional status and birth outcomes.
The whole Enov range had been developed for improving the nutritional and health status of the target group in either non-emergency/development or chronic emergency contexts.
These products are mainly use for home fortification when nutritional requirements cannot be met with locally available and accessible foods. . As of 2013, Nutriset has been involved in about 20 research collaborations with various partner organizations to optimize solutions to help prevent malnutrition in vulnerable populations using the “1000 days following conception” approach.
From our creation, Nutriset has supported local production. In 2005, we created a local and global network of producers: PlumpyField. Based on each producer’s competencies and their national specificities, the network unites 11 entrepreneurs (NGO, private companies, non- for-profits) who are manufacturing Plumpy products in countries with a high level of under- nutrition. Seven members are operating in SUN countries (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Haiti, Madagascar, Niger, Uganda and Tanzania). These organizations, by purchasing raw materials locally, can also have a positive impact on agricultural and economic development.
Nutriset believes that innovation is a key asset in the fight against malnutrition and participates in more than 60 research projects, focusing on a number of issues including efficacy, effectiveness and acceptability trials, anthropology and socio economic studies, distribution, delivery and demand assessment.
In 2012 we were able to reach 5.3 million of children through our work. Our objective for Nutriset and PlumpyField is to ensure 9 million children benefiting from our products per year by 2018.
