Samil Industrial Company was founded in 2011 as a partnership between Nutriset, France, and Salih Abdelrahman Yagoub Company (“SAY Co” the parent company and flagship of Yagoub Group), in Sudan. SAMIL has established a state of the art facility in the heart of Sudan’s capital Khartoum and is now meeting the majority of need for Ready to Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) in Sudan and some of its neighboring countries.
Statement of Commitments
Since its foundation, SAMIL has contributed to the provision of enhanced products for the treatment of acute malnutrition and building nutritional autonomy at a local level. Their mission is to participate in the global efforts of combating malnutrition to meet the nutritional needs of children, seek ways to foster stronger communities and a healthier environment for future generations.
Samil currently produces Plumpy’Nut®, a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for nutritional rehabilitation of children with severe acute malnutrition, and Plumpy’Sup®, a Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) for the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition in children over 6 months of age. These two products are distributed through humanitarian and social organizations.
SAMIL is a member of the PlumpyField Network and a holder of the license of Nutriset patented Plumpy’Type products based on the franchise agreement. PlumpyField, initiated in 2005 by Nutriset, groups independent entrepreneurs that produce and distribute products from Plumpy and Enov ranges (RUF and LNS) in programmatic countries.
Today, PlumpyField includes 10 members in developing countries, as well as a non-profit organization. It is now present in 9 countries including France, Niger, Ethiopia, Madagascar, India, Sudan, Haïti and Burkina Faso as well as a non-for-profit in the United States.
The aim of the PlumpyField network is to improve access to innovative nutritional solutions meeting international quality standards through local production, and serves as an important leverage of economic development in Southern countries.
Samil aims to help develop the local economy through improving agricultural practices and building autonomy among farmers to assure quality, raw products. Their experience in peanut production has been a great achievement. Samil has successfully worked with local farmers to ensure production of quality peanuts through improved farming strategies, better storage techniques, and enhanced post-harvest processing techniques. Samil has taken the lead in the production of peanut and peanut-related products.
With the support and expertise of the PlumpyField network, Samil responds to nutritional emergencies in Sudan, and neighboring countries. Samil’s vision is to be the Lead Proactive Member “LPM” of the PlumpyField Network in Africa and the Middle East, in providing solutions to malnutrition for the children in Sudan and the region at large.
In its year, Samil reached 15,000 children. This increased to 100,000 by 2014. Samil commits to reaching around 800,000 children by 2018.
Moreover, Samil focuses on local solutions for nutrition within the country, working with the Federal Ministry of Health, various local NGO’s and academic/research institutions. Research plays a key role in Samil’s work in collaboration with local NGOs and educational institutions.
