Alive & Thrive: Breastfeeding in the Workplace in Vietnam

Nutrition context / project objective

Alive & Thrive (A&T) is a 6 y ear initiative (2009-2014) to improve infant and young child feeding practices, targeting 16 million children under the age of 2 in Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

In Vietnam, 29 % of children under five are stunted and only 36 percent of mothers breastfeed their infants until 19-24 months of age. In response A&T, partnered with the Department of Women’s Welfare and the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) to implement a workplace intervention programme.

Project scope and partner roles

The programme is comprised of four distinct steps: the development of behaviour change communication materials on labor policy relating to female workers, maternity policy and breastfeeding practices; building awareness of infant and young child feeding and labour policy for female workers; establishing breastfeeding rooms in enterprises and monitoring the condition of breastfeeding rooms.

A&T provided financial sponsorship and technical assistance to set up breastfeeding rooms. Viet Nam General Confederation of Labor engaged local enterprises. Participating enterprises provided training on breastfeeding for female workers and a hygienic and private space to enable the mother to express breast milk.

Impact

The programme is envisaged to expand to 70 locations in 10 provinces by end of 2014 with 70 breastfeeding rooms set up, 80 orientation sessions conducted and 157,116 female staff reached
