SUN Business Network Zambia: Marketing Nutrition for the Base of the Pyramid

5 February 2015

Despite the availability of nutritious products aimed at 6-24mo old infants, these products struggle to reach the 4 billion people at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP). In April 2014, Hystra released a GAIN-funded report titled ‘Marketing Nutrition to the Base of Pyramid’. The report looks at some of the key areas where market based solutions can contribute to the improvement of nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days for BoP families in developing countries.

Presented by Lucie Klarsfeld, an author of the report, the Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network in Zambia, hosted a workshop to help food companies design or refine their marketing and sales practices for lower income consumers. The workshop focused on best practices in the nutrition value chain, including value proposition, marketing strategy, as well as sales force organization and economic sustainability.

The event was attended by 12 leading Zambian food organisations, providing positive feedback on the practicality and relevance of the content covered. The Business Network looks forward to further workshops to provide a forum to improve and grow the market for nutritious foods in Zambia.
