SUN Global Gathering 2014 and the International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2)

16-21st November 2014

There has been much activity amongst the international nutrition community this November, with the SUN Global Gathering, The Second International Conference on Nutrition and launch of the Global Nutrition Report, all which took place within a short time frame. In addition, the SUN Business Network co-hosted a High Level Dinner which marked an important moment for the role of business in nutrition.

The 2nd International Conference on Nutrition (November 19-21) was a high-level intergovernmental meeting that focused global attention on addressing malnutrition in all its forms. Over 2200 participants attended the meeting from multiple sectors, including nearly 100 representatives from the business community, from all levels of the agri-food value chain. The private sector also held a pre-conference meeting with Dr. Jose Graziano da Silva, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Association (FAO), and Dr. Oleg Chestnov, Assistant Director General of the World Health Organization. Notably, members of the private sector delegation were given the opportunity of addressing the closing session of the conference, to emphasize the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in addressing nutritional challenges. The speakers included, SUN Business Network Advisory Group Member and CEO, Protein Kissée Là Marie Konate (Cote d’Ivoire), as well as David Crean (Vice President Corporate R&D, Mars, USA) and Nico van Belzen (Director General, International Dairy Federation, Belgium)

The conference followed the SUN Movement Global Gathering (16-18 November) bought together over 300 participants from the 54 SUN countries and SUN networks, including 20 from business, to contribute to the outcomes of ICN2 through shared country experiences and approaches to scaling up nutrition. In particular, the leadership roles of Axton Salim (Director, Indofood) and Marie Konate (CEO, PKL), were widely recognised by the senior figures in the SUN Movement as key indicators of the growth of our network and demonstrating the diversity of our global network and reach.

In the same week, SBN convenors, GAIN and WFP, co-hosted a high level dinner with Unilever and DSM on 18 November, highlighting SBN’s progress and sharing experiences on the role of business in multi-stakeholder partnerships for nutrition.

The dinner included speeches from SBN Advisory Group co-chairs, Axton Salim (Director Indofood) and Feike Sijbesma (CEO Royal DSM), as well the Executive Directors of SBN convenors GAIN (Marc Van Ameringen) and WFP (Ertharin Cousin). Several other key speakers shared their reflections on role of business, including Gerda Verburg (Permanent Representative, Rome-based UN Agencies, Government of the Netherlands), Marie Konaté (CEO PKL, Cote d’Ivoire), William Chilufya (Country Coordinator, CSO SUN Alliance, Zambia). Moreover, Dr Takeshi Kimura (Board Member, Ajinomoto) and Mr Keiya Iida (Assistant Minister for Promotion of Healthcare Industries and Global Expansion of Healthcare, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) announced a new Japanese initiative against malnutrition, ‘Nutrition Japan’. Final remarks were made by Cathryn Sleight (Senior Vice President, Knorr, Unilever) and the interim SUN coordinator, Tom Arnold.
