Food Industry Asia (FIA) and the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network will be joining hands to bring finalists of the Global SUN Pitch Competition to the stage of the FIA Food for the Future Summit on 23 April 2020. The third edition of the c-suite industry summit will convene senior executives and decision-makers from leading multinational food and beverage (F&B) brands, food innovators, government and national industry bodies, academia, and experts from international organisations from the region and further afield.
The SUN Pitch Competition is the flagship event of the SUN Business Network, which is co-convened by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the World Food Programme (WFP). Now in its second year, the competition seeks to identify Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that can provide big, inspiring and disruptive investment solutions for improving nutrition, in response to food system innovation challenges such as food design, post-harvest loss reduction, market connectivity and food safety.
“While SMEs are the largest providers of food, they remain relatively untapped when it comes to developing and scaling market-based solutions that can improve the consumption of nutritious food. The SUN Pitch Competition aims to showcase a deal flow of nutrition related investments from SMEs that can catalyse innovation in local food systems and improve the affordability of nutritious and safe foods for low income consumers. By partnering with FIA, the SUN Business Network is looking forward to leveraging industry expertise and connecting our SMEs with some of the largest responsible companies and stakeholders in the sector”, said Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director of GAIN and member of the SUN Business Network Advisory Group.
More than 1,000 participants from over 20 countries across Africa and Asia will be part of National SUN Pitch Competitions from August to December 2019, with all entries evaluated based on the following seven criteria: innovation, nutrition impact, socio-economic impact, commercial viability, affordability and adaptability. The top 20 finalists shortlisted from national competitions will go on to embark on a 3-month global acceleration programme, before competing in the Global SUN Pitch Competition in April 2020.
“The FIA Food for the Future Summit is the platform that takes both global and regional trends, and demonstrates the innovation happening among big corporates, SMEs and start-ups to solve some of the biggest challenges we have across the industry. The partnership with the SUN Business Network is to help connect SMEs and innovators with relevant stakeholders to scale the changes necessary. I am excited to see the solutions that these businesses can offer in improving the affordability and accessibility of safe and nutritious foods”, said Matt Kovac, Executive Director of FIA.
Through this competition, the SUN Business Network aims to support SMEs in emerging markets in scaling up disruptive and commercially viable innovations aimed towards improving the availability of affordable nutritious foods. Participating SMEs stand a chance to not only receive comprehensive business development and nutrition training, but also a range of technical assistance and investment prizes.
Nutrition underpins all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is directly embedded into 12 of the 17 SDGs, thereby illustrating how it is both a maker and marker of sustainable development. At FIA Food for the Future Summit, all 20 finalists of the Global SUN Pitch Competition will have the opportunity to share their innovative solutions to improve nutrition with entrepreneurs, industry experts, investors and business accelerators.
