Celebrating International Youth Day with Ruth Munyinyi

What inspires you to work?

“I am passionate about leveraging relationships that are catalytic in creating systemic change. I believe in the fundamental role of youths in bringing fresh perspectives, energy, and innovative ideas to address complex societal issues.”

Your scope of work in supporting SMEs within the SBN network. What partnership opportunities are available for the youth as employees or as SMEs?

My role in SBN as a Senior Associate, Global Partnerships is to leverage various partnerships that can support SMEs. Ideally, looking towards matching the needs of SMEs and global partners through access to technical support or financial support.

With 1 in every 4 youths in the world being involved in entrepreneurship, youths require tremendous support to ensure that their ventures flourish. There are various opportunities to present to support youth entrepreneurs such as SBN where we have a specific strategy targeting the youth in nutrition-sensitive businesses. Such platforms are key in unlocking the impact of these youth-led SMEs. I would encourage for youths to engage in these platforms and in the same breath put out a challenge to organizations especially in the development space to boost and customize their support to youth enterprise.

Are there misconceptions about youth at the workplace?

One of the most prevalent misconceptions is that young employees lack experience and, therefore, cannot contribute effectively. While they may have less professional experience, they often bring fresh perspectives, innovation, and a willingness to learn which is valuable.

Second misconception is around accountability, I think we all want to be successful and hence we would want to see the products of the efforts we have put in. Holding the youth accountable to success is a good way to ensure that they are focuses on positive outcomes.

What does success look like as a youth working with SMEs in SBN?

Success is when a youth-led SME is able to access the appropriate support they require to advance their business. Being able to actively form systems and relationships that will positively impact some the youth led business in our network.

As we commemorate this year’s international youth day , what inspiration would you pass to young entrepreneurs in the nutrition space?

Having the right collaborations and partnerships is key in pivoting youth-led enterprises. Ensure that you are well aligned in appropriate platforms and networks that can support growth. Secondly, I would urge the youth to think about impact, more so impact at scale and social impact as well. Your enthusiasm will drive your commitment, and your purpose will guide you through challenges.
