SBN Sri Lanka Members & partners gathered on 10th of December 2019 for the SBN Sri Lanka quarterly round up. The participants were welcomed by Ms. Brenda Barton, Country Director of World Food Programme Sri Lanka. In her opening remarks, “WFP is happy to facilitate this platform for businesses in Sri Lanka. The network connects the private sector, governments, civil society, the United Nations, and academia in a collective effort to improve nutrition in Sri Lanka. Convening, assessing and advocating for nutrition is more important than ever before with the country facing a nutritional ‘double burden’ — undernutrition rates unchanged for over a decade in addition to soaring rates of overweight and obesity.”
This quarterly round up considered Sri Lanka members’ specific action plans for 2020 as part of a larger strategy going forward, including establishing common goals and results for collaboration between all stakeholders over the next two years.
SBN organized a coffee and dialogue for its members and partners in February 2020 and the discussion theme of this session was Workplace Health and Wellbeing. This session was started with a brief on nutrition issues in the country followed by updates on the progress of SBN and its expansion into SMEs from the Private Sector. Throughout this dialogue, Paternity & Maternity Leave, Smoking in the workplace and Breastfeeding at workplaces were topics highlighted by the attendees.
As a part of the network’s 2020 work plan, a quarterly meeting was organized with the aim to bring members, as well as key stakeholders, together to share and discuss updates, challenges and achievements in order to help strengthen the network. The 4th quarterly meeting was held at the Movenpick Hotel Colombo on the 11th of September.
After the SBN updates, the attendees were grouped into two work groups, Nutrition Related communication in Private Sector and Workplace Health and Nutrition for the Private Sector, for an interactive discussion. These work groups were led by two elected representatives accordingly as they discussed current obstacles and preventive measures practiced by the organizations. The groups then presented their discussions to all attendees.
SUN Business Network together with its project implementation partner, Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) organized the SBN Bi-Annual Gathering on 24th March 2022 for its members and other partners involved. Mr. Ajith D Perera started the event with opening remarks and highlighted the successful partnership FCCISL had with SBN & WFP Sri Lanka. A special speech was delivered by Mr Andrea Berardo – Deputy Country Director, World Food Programme Sri Lanka on the importance of the SBN in Sri Lanka.
