SBN Case Study: Youth

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY WITH SBN NIGERIA COORDINATOR

Tomisin Odunmbaku

Your Role as an SBN Coordinator

The adage that “nutrition is everyone’s business” holds true, and being deeply ingrained in this principle, particularly in my capacity as the national coordinator, I am fueled by the realization that the ambitious goal of achieving the SDGs by 2030 hinges greatly on our proactive endeavours. Operating within a cohort of passionate individuals who are unreservedly dedicated to achieving tangible results, my commitment is resolute in ensuring that our collective actions make a resounding impact. I am acutely aware that my contributions gain true significance when harmonized with the collaborative efforts of others, motivating me to invest my utmost in advancing GAIN’s vision and mission. Moreover, my engagement at GAIN not only drives positive change but also cultivates personal growth. As the national coordinator, I am conscious that steering the network carries the potential to unlock broader opportunities for shaping the outcomes of both GAIN and SBN’s shared aspirations – an aspiration I passionately endorse: a world without malnutrition.

Your scope of work in supporting SMEs within the SBN network

I’m driven to assist SMEs in the SBN network because of the need to encourage private sector commitment to better nutrition practices and provide the necessary support for these businesses to succeed in this endeavor. This leads me to consistently seek out and identify ways to help SMEs within the network, enhancing their efforts by building partnerships within and outside the network. SMEs often face challenges due to poorly executed policies, resulting in higher costs for producing and delivering healthy diets to their consumers. This compels me to collaborate closely with businesses and supporting organizations to offer tailored assistance that enables these businesses to thrive.

Are there misconceptions about youth at the workplace?

Yes, there are indeed some misconceptions about youth in the workplace. One common misconception is that younger employees are solely focused on technology and lack the necessary interpersonal skills. While it’s true that many young professionals are tech-savvy, they also bring a wealth of creativity, adaptability, and eagerness to learn. Another misconception is that young workers are not committed and tend to change jobs frequently. However, this belief overlooks the fact that young employees often seek growth opportunities and are willing to switch roles for personal and professional development. It’s essential to recognize that youth can bring fresh perspectives, innovation, and enthusiasm to the workplace, challenging these misconceptions and contributing positively to the overall dynamics of the team.

What does success look like as a youth working with SMEs in SBN?

Success for me working with SMEs in SBN is characterized by a multifaceted impact. Firstly, it entails fostering tangible growth for the SMEs by implementing innovative strategies that drive their expansion and competitiveness within the market. Success also involves building robust networks and collaborations among SMEs, enabling them to collectively navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Additionally, it means actively contributing to the improvement of nutrition outcomes through the promotion of healthier practices within SMEs’ operations. Personal success as a young employee is intertwined with continuous learning and skill development, while demonstrating a proactive attitude that not only propels the SMEs forward but also serves as an inspiration to peers and stakeholders. Ultimately, success is reflected in a flourishing ecosystem where SMEs thrive, nutrition improves, and young professionals play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for businesses and communities alike.

Share any notable success stories / achievements that you are proud of as a young Coordinator

In 2022, I undertook a pivotal responsibility – spearheading an innovation challenge. Our primary objective was to unearth inventive solutions capable of addressing the pressing food safety concerns entrenched within Nigeria’s traditional markets. Collaborating closely with five enterprising young innovators, we facilitated an all-encompassing mentorship program under the guidance of esteemed industry experts. Through these mentorship sessions and advisory interactions, the innovators refined their skills, crafting compelling pitches designed to stand out. Notably, two out of the five ventures achieved remarkable success, clinching the 2nd and 3rd prizes by showcasing their concepts to global investors and stakeholders, competing against counterparts from diverse nations. The collective prize pool of USD 8,000 was justly distributed among these deserving youth innovators and entrepreneurs. These enterprises have subsequently transformed into fervent nutrition advocates, leveraging prominent platforms to consistently champion the cause of food safety. This accomplishment underscores the latent potential that surfaces when youthful innovation is nurtured to confront critical challenges head-on.

As we commemorate this year’s international youth day, what inspiration would you pass to young entrepreneurs in the nutrition space?

Your journey in the realm of nutrition holds immense promise and potential. Embrace the challenges as opportunities to create meaningful change. Your innovative ideas have the power to reshape how we nourish ourselves and our communities. Stay curious, remain adaptable, and don’t shy away from pushing boundaries. Collaborate with like-minded individuals, draw from the wisdom of mentors, and learn from failures as much as successes. Remember, your efforts in the nutrition space have a profound impact on the well-being of individuals and societies. So, keep your passion alive, persevere through setbacks, and let your commitment to better nutrition drive you to make a lasting difference.

Happy International Youth Day!
